Interesting post - this website ( http://www.cislamica.org/comerciohalal/dinardirham/dinardirham.html ) tends to support the opinion of the man interviewed - "The reason is that all forms of oppression, destruction of the natural resources of our planet and injustice between poor and rich, all are ultimately based upon the rule of usury and the dominant financial and economic ethos." The stability (zero inflation) and reliability of gold and silver as common-use currency make a compelling argument.
Is this Malaysia? I'm curious, because lack of competition in the banking sector might also lead to overcharging by the bank, with the predictable result.
In any case, any argument in favour of returning to the gold standard will be met (except by Ron Paul) with hysterical squealing that it is the thin edge of the wedge that will end with the world under sharia law.
It is I think in Indonesia (same country almost).
I found it interesting because it has show how ordinary people can save money without being part of the speculative system. The big players who have millions, billions, trillions or more can afford that game but those bellow their level stand to lose a lot in it. I had visited Indonesia and must say that a motorcycle equals a family car over there.
Maybe for Muslims, this is an issue deriving from their religious law, but I think the American constitution defines dollar as a piece of silver as well. Because that's what it is. The currency of my home region several hundred years ago was tolar, there are derelict silver mines not far from where I'm writing now and a mint museum.
I think it is Indonesia and the narration in the video sounds Gaelic.
I don't imagine Russia would find much to disagree with here - they are the world's number one gold producer. That said, their banks can be chaotic and sloppy: I never noticed that their fees were particularly high, but my in-laws lost a lot years back when their bank just folded up overnight, no warning or anything. A lot of Russians from their generation are mistrustful of banks and banking.
